Linux Security Advisories Tcat's Personal Picks (Freeware)

Note: There are many great commercial packages that I like, such as Pest Patrol (http://www.pestpatrol.com) and Spy Sweeper (http://www.webroot.com/).

My "personal picks" have been limited to freeware or open source offering on the assumption that the reader is a student running a lab.

Firewall: Personal Kerio Spyware Detection: SpyBot Anti-Virus: Anti Virus Guard Anti-Spam Email Filter: MailWasher MS Windows Firewall

Technically not freeware however, no additional charge for XP I include it not because it can do the stateful packet inspection3 Kerio and other can do. I am a big fan of using one NIC for external connection (through a firewall) and another NIC for communications with my internal network. Only the “free” Microsoft Windows firewall will support “multi homing4” on my PC when running MS Windows. For a detailed look at how to setup the Windows firewall see the footnotes5 6.
