The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is the developer for Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) documents. FIPS publications are developed when NIST feels that no existing standards adequate address an area of technology that is useful to the government. Among the FIPS standards related to cryptography are ones for secure hashing, digital signature and the AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) algorithm.
