Protocols for Conversations
Suppose someone walks up to you and says, Knock-knock. The commonly-expected response to such a comment is, Whos there?. This is an example of a simple protocol. If you had answered, The sky is blue, rather than Whos there? communication between you and the other party would probably break down pretty quickly. The other party might wait silently, hoping that youll get around to saying Whos there? so that they can tell their joke, or might look at you strangely and walk away, deciding theyd be better off telling their Knock-knock joke to someone else. On the other hand, if you answer with the, Whos there? comment that is expected, the other person proceeds with Ida Mae, and waits for you to reply, Ida Mae who? before replying, Ida maybe better learn more about TCP/IP before taking the Network+ exam.
