Passport and Liberty
Until recently, interest in single sign on technology was primarily limited to organizations intranets. The problem of orchestrating and coordinating a single sign on process across multiple organizations, as would be the case for the Internet, is what the Passport and Liberty technologies were designed to address.
Over the past year however, enterprise vendors have gotten a better idea about how to approach the task and major industry players are pursuing the two competing initiatives. The Microsoft camp is promoting use of their Passport service, which will provide a single point of user authentication across the Internet. The competing AOL/Oracle/Sun camp is advocating the Liberty Alliance project whose goals are much the same, but which pledges a more open and vendor-independent approach to the task of user authentication.
