IX  Network Management Protocols and Utilities

So far, we’ve seen a number of application protocols – that is, protocols that help users accomplish tasks on the network. There are also system-level protocols, and associated utility programs to access them, which are important to the ongoing management of a TCP/IP based network.

These protocols and utilities are used in three situations:

  1. Directly by the operating system to automatically configure TCP/IP settings on client computers

  2. By technicians diagnosing network trouble

  3. By network administrators monitoring the status of the network.

We’ll discuss each of these in the following sections.
