II Protocol Suite Overview
We will begin our discussion with
an overview of the key protocol suites, which are groups of
related protocols operating at various layers of the OSI
model, that are in use today in the real world. Understand that
many more protocols not in wide use, or that are not testable on the
Network + exam, will not be covered in this text. We invite you to examine
the various protocols in existence to learn more with private study.
This chapter will focus on an overview of the protocols that are pertinent
to the Network+ test, and discuss how they map to the OSI model. We
will explore the most popular protocol suite, TCP/IP, in more
detail in the following chapter.
The NETWORK+ test assumes that all protocols map to the OSI model, including the TCP/IP suite.
As a Network+ specialist, you can
look at network activities such as retrieving a file from an Internet
web server and displaying it on the users PC at several levels.
The user-level file-retrieval operation is actually made
up of many smaller, lower-level network operations in which
frames and packets of data are exchanged between the
web server and the users PC.
