I  Concepts & Terms Required - Chapter 0110

To understand network administration we must anticipate acquiring a solid knowledge base of the various Network Operating Systems being utilized in the network world along with their unique features and quirks. The various components required for successful installation and maintenance of a network is integral to maintaining a stable network environment.

We’ll discuss the capabilities of a NOS in general and its clients, and then dig in to some details of Windows NT (and 2000), Novell Netware, and everyone’s “free as in speech” OS, Linux. After that, we’ll finish by discussing storage technologies that are frequently part of any network, since one of the primary functions of networks is file sharing and storage.

  • Understand the typical functions provided by a NOS

  • Know details about the following popular NOS’s: Windows NT, Novell Netware, Linux, and Apple Macintosh

  • Know how to access files and printers on these NOS’s using popular clients

  • Understand the concept of RAID storage, and know the capabilities of the most popular RAID levels

  • Understand SAN’s and NAS’s and the differences between them
