Hardware Loopback Connections

A loopback is a means of testing signal transmission. In addition to using the built-in software loopback in TCP/IP, you can also create a hardware-based loopback connection, which crosses the computer’s transmit to its receive, receive to transmit, etc. This is useful to test that a computer’s NIC is functioning, if other computers on the LAN can talk to each other but not to that computer, and if you’ve already verified the TCP/IP installation via ping 127.0.0.1.
