The installation of fiber follows two basic design criteria. They are: loose-tube and tight-buffered cable. Loose-tube is used outside buildings throughout North America, while tight-buffered cable typically is found inside buildings. Single-fiber tight-buffered cables are typically used as jumpers to terminate loose-tube cables as well as patch cords to fiber-optic based NIC's and Storage Area Networks (SAN) connecting to Local Area Networks.
