Equipment Availability
The latest fad in computing
seems to arise with each issue of InfoWorld or PC
Week. While the ongoing cycle is endless, there is a sweet
spot balancing between the latest CPU and tolerating a 486
computer. Carry a piece too long and you will find both service times
up with spare parts down. Productivity on equipment
that is too old is not productive time as well.

Rule of Thumb #2: When designing a network, typically specify one step older than the latest and greatest. For example, with Gigabit Ethernet now a reality, for client side NICs go with Fast Ethernet cards. |
When considering equipment purchases,
plan for the ability to upgrade. For example if you only need
one CPU in a server, get a server with the ability to
add a second processor at a later date. When prices come down
on that really fast and expensive processor, you can easily add the
second CPU, if you thought of that when selecting the server at
the time of purchase.
