10 Base 5 Coax
This old frozen garden hose cabling is almost (thankfully) gone. As the description implies, this cable tended to be thick and stiff, and difficult to work with. The distance limitation per segment is 500 meters, and carries data at 10Mbit/sec.
Because the thick cable is unwieldy and somewhat expensive, and connecting devices to a 10Base5 network requires skill and special connection hardware, it is most often seen as part of the main backbone of a LAN -- the part of the LAN wiring over which the most traffic travels -- rather than as the standard cabling between individual users workstations on the LAN.
