Method to the Madness
One of the simplest ways is to save the file to another disk such as a floppy disk. We call this removable media. Today with the ease of CD-R/RW burning, we can backup this way.
Another method is to backup the files on another drive or across a network to another drive. One of the most common methods is to backup the files to a tape drive. Have you heard the phrase restore from tape?
If we lose a drive or a file then we have a copy of the information to restore from.
We back up in the first place because we lose files, corrupt files and drives die. As our data is important the method we employ to protect that data should be carefully considered.
We can specify where, when and how the files will be backed up. If we are on a network the system administrator makes those decisions and uses a backup (program) agent. There is also scheduling done to determine what type of Backup will occur.
