ATX Form Factor

Today the ATX design reigns. The change is not so much about square inches. It is about how the square inches are laid out. The orientation on the systemboard is rotated 90 degrees. Cable connections for drives are closer to the part of the case where the drives are usually mounted, and the CPU is closer to the power supply, and therefore the cooling fan.
