Match Negation

One last Meta character is the ^ used within the brackets. This is the not function. It means that the match would be anything but the character’s within the brackets. Again in example filenames, hat[^23]* would match hat1 hat11 hat12 hat13 . This statement says to match all files that start with hat and do not include the numbers 2 or 3 as the next character and have zero or more additional character’s.
